Most refrigerator repairs cost between $150 and $700 in 2026, and the most common fixes — fan motors, defrost components, thermostats, door seals — land in the $200 to $500 range including parts and labor. The big exception is sealed-system work (compressor or refrigerant leak), which starts around $700 and often makes replacement the smarter call on an older unit. Here’s what each repair typically costs, what drives the price, and how to decide repair versus replace.
Refrigerator Repair Cost by Problem
| Repair | Typical Cost (Parts + Labor) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $75 – $150 | Usually credited toward the repair |
| Door gasket (seal) replacement | $100 – $350 | Cheap insurance — a bad seal overworks everything else |
| Thermostat / cold control | $100 – $300 | Common on older units |
| Evaporator fan motor | $150 – $400 | Classic “freezer cold, fridge warm” cause |
| Condenser fan motor | $150 – $350 | Unit runs hot, cycles on/off |
| Defrost heater, timer, or sensor | $150 – $450 | Frost buildup on the back wall is the tell |
| Water inlet valve | $125 – $300 | Ice maker/dispenser not getting water |
| Ice maker repair or replacement | $150 – $500 | See our ice maker guide |
| Main control board | $200 – $600 | Board prices vary widely by brand |
| Compressor replacement | $700 – $1,500+ | Sealed system — see below |
| Refrigerant leak (sealed system) | $400 – $1,200+ | Finding the leak is most of the labor |
These are typical ranges for standard residential units in our Central Texas service area; built-in, counter-depth luxury, and commercial boxes run higher. Your written quote is the number that counts — treat these as calibration so a quote doesn’t catch you blind.
What Drives the Price Up or Down
- The brand and model. A control board for a basic top-freezer might be $120; the same function on a French-door with a screen in the door can be several times that. Parts pricing — not labor — is where brands differ most. (Deciding between brands? See LG vs. Samsung refrigerators.)
- Sealed system vs. everything else. Fans, heaters, boards, valves, gaskets bolt on and swap out. The compressor and refrigerant loop require evacuation, brazing, recharge, and EPA-certified handling — different tools, different time, different price class.
- Warranty status. Many major brands warrant the compressor part for 10 years (LG and Samsung prominently). The part being free still leaves labor and refrigerant, but it can turn a $1,200 job into $400-$600. Decode your unit’s age from its serial number with our Appliance Age Decoder before assuming you’re out of coverage.
- Access and configuration. Built-ins, cabinet-depth installs, and water lines routed behind cabinetry add time.
Repair or Replace? The Honest Math
Refrigerators typically last 10 to 15 years (full lifespan guide). Two rules cover most cases:
- The 50% rule: if the repair exceeds half the cost of a comparable new unit, replace.
- The age gate: past 10 years, any sealed-system quote is a replacement conversation. Fan motors and gaskets, by contrast, are worth doing at almost any age.
One more Texas-specific factor: a refrigerator in a garage works brutally hard here — ambient heat shortens component life, and repairs on garage units recur sooner. Factor that into the math for a garage fridge.

Can You Fix Any of This Yourself?
A few items are genuinely DIY:
- Cleaning the condenser coils (underneath or behind the unit) — free, takes 15 minutes, and resolves a surprising share of “not cooling well” and “running constantly” complaints. Do it yearly; twice yearly with shedding pets.
- Door gaskets on many models press or screw into place.
- Clearing a frosted-over defrost drain — unplug, empty, let it thaw fully.
Diagnosis is where DIY usually stalls: “not cooling” has half a dozen causes with identical symptoms. Our refrigerator not cooling guide walks the diagnostic tree honestly, including the point where a meter and experience take over.
