GE Appliance Serial Number Lookup: Find Age & Model Info

Whether you are troubleshooting a problem, deciding between repair or replacement, or selling your home, knowing the age of your GE appliance is essential. The manufacture date is encoded right in the serial number — you just need to know how to read it. This guide covers all GE-family brands including GE, GE Profile, Cafe, Monogram, and Hotpoint, with step-by-step decoding instructions and a free online tool.

Use Our Free GE Serial Number Decoder

The fastest way to look up your GE appliance’s age is our free Appliance Age Decoder. Select “GE” as the brand, enter your serial number, and instantly get the manufacture date, appliance age, and estimated remaining lifespan. It supports all GE-family brands and serial number formats.

Where to Find Your GE Serial Number

The serial number is printed on a data plate (also called a rating plate or nameplate) attached to your appliance. The location depends on the appliance type:

Appliance TypeWhere to Look
RefrigeratorInside the fresh food compartment, on the left sidewall near the top. Some models place it behind the crisper drawers or on the back of the unit.
DishwasherOpen the door and look along the left side of the tub or the top edge of the door. On some models, it is on the left side of the inner door panel.
Oven / RangeBehind the storage drawer at the bottom, or on the door frame visible when the door is open. Wall ovens often have it on the left side of the frame.
WasherOn the back of the control panel (lift or tilt the panel), or inside the door frame on front-load models.
DryerInside the door opening on the left or right side of the frame, or on the back of the unit.
MicrowaveInside the door cavity, usually on the right or left sidewall, or on the back of the unit.

Tip: You will see both a model number and a serial number on the data plate. You need the serial number to determine the appliance’s age. GE serial numbers are typically 8-12 characters starting with letters.

How to Decode GE Serial Numbers

GE uses a two-letter code system where the first two characters of the serial number encode the manufacture date. Here is how it works:

  • Position 1 (first letter): Indicates the month of manufacture
  • Position 2 (second letter): Indicates the year of manufacture

GE Month Codes

LetterMonth
AJanuary
DFebruary
FMarch
GApril
HMay
LJune
MJuly
RAugust
SSeptember
TOctober
VNovember
ZDecember

Notice that GE skips several letters (B, C, E, J, K, etc.) in their month coding — this is intentional and has been consistent across GE serial numbers for decades.

GE Year Codes

GE uses a 12-year cycle that repeats. The same letters are reused every 12 years, so you may need context (the appliance’s condition, model number era, or purchase records) to determine the exact decade.

LetterPossible Years
A1989, 2001, 2013, 2025
D1990, 2002, 2014, 2026
F1991, 2003, 2015
G1992, 2004, 2016
H1993, 2005, 2017
L1994, 2006, 2018
M1995, 2007, 2019
R1996, 2008, 2020
S1997, 2009, 2021
T1998, 2010, 2022
V1999, 2011, 2023
Z2000, 2012, 2024

Example Decodings

  • Serial: RR123456 — First letter R = August, second letter R = 2020. Manufactured August 2020.
  • Serial: AH789012 — First letter A = January, second letter H = 2017. Manufactured January 2017.
  • Serial: TZ456789 — First letter T = October, second letter Z = 2024. Manufactured October 2024.
  • Serial: LS345678 — First letter L = June, second letter S = 2021. Manufactured June 2021.

Not sure which cycle applies? Our Appliance Age Decoder automatically resolves the 12-year cycle based on your model number and current date, giving you the most accurate year without guesswork.

GE Product Lines Explained

GE Appliances (now owned by Haier) manufactures appliances under several brand names. All of them use the same serial number format, so the decoding method above works across the entire family:

BrandMarket PositionCommon Appliances
GEStandard / value tierRefrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, washers, dryers, microwaves
GE ProfileMid-range / premium featuresSmart refrigerators, induction ranges, dishwashers with advanced wash systems
CafeHigh-end / customizable designCounter-depth refrigerators, dual-fuel ranges, built-in coffee systems
MonogramLuxury / professional gradeBuilt-in refrigerators, pro ranges, integrated columns
HotpointBudget / entry levelBasic refrigerators, ranges, washers, dryers

All five brands are built in the same factories and share the same serial number encoding system. If you have a GE Profile or Cafe appliance, decode it exactly the same way as a standard GE unit.

Understanding GE Model Numbers

While the serial number tells you when the appliance was made, the model number tells you what it is. GE model numbers follow a pattern:

  • First 3 letters: Appliance type and brand tier (e.g., GFE = GE French-door refrigerator, PFE = Profile French-door, CYE = Cafe French-door)
  • Numbers after: Size, features, and configuration
  • Last letters: Color/finish code (SS = stainless steel, WW = white, BB = black, etc.)

Common GE model number prefixes:

PrefixMeaning
GFE/GNE/GSS/GTEGE refrigerators (French door, quad door, side-by-side, top freezer)
PFE/PVD/PYEGE Profile refrigerators
CYE/CWECafe refrigerators
GTW/GFWGE washers (top-load, front-load)
GTD/GFDGE dryers (top-load style, front-load)
GDT/GDFGE dishwashers

When to Replace Your GE Appliance

Knowing your appliance’s age helps you decide whether to invest in a repair or start budgeting for a replacement. Here are average lifespans by appliance type:

ApplianceAverage LifespanConsider Replacing AfterTypical Repair Cost
Refrigerator12-18 years14 years$200-$500
Dishwasher9-12 years10 years$150-$400
Oven/Range (gas)15-20 years17 years$150-$500
Oven/Range (electric)13-15 years14 years$150-$400
Washer10-13 years11 years$150-$400
Dryer10-13 years11 years$100-$400
Microwave7-10 years8 years$100-$300

General rule of thumb: If the repair cost exceeds 50% of the price of a new unit, and the appliance is past the midpoint of its expected lifespan, replacement is usually the smarter financial move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all GE brands use the same serial number format?

Yes. GE, GE Profile, Cafe, Monogram, and Hotpoint all use the identical two-letter date code system (first letter = month, second letter = year). The decoding method is the same regardless of which GE-family brand you own.

My GE serial number starts with a number, not a letter. What do I do?

Some older GE appliances (pre-1990) or warranty-replacement units may use a different format. If your serial starts with numbers, try entering it into our Appliance Age Decoder, which handles multiple GE serial number formats automatically. You can also check the data plate for a separate manufacture date printed in plain text.

How do I tell which year in the 12-year cycle is correct?

The easiest way is to use your model number as context. Each GE model number corresponds to a specific production era, which narrows down the correct year in the cycle. Our free decoder does this automatically. You can also consider when you purchased the appliance, its condition, and the style/features to narrow it down.

Is the serial number the same as the model number?

No. The model number identifies the product type, features, and configuration. The serial number is unique to your individual unit and contains the manufacture date. Both are on the data plate, and you need the serial number (not the model number) to determine the age.
