Appliance Age Decoder

Not sure how old your appliance is? Enter the brand and serial number below and we'll decode the manufacture date, show you where it sits in its expected lifespan, and help you plan ahead.

How It Works

Appliance manufacturers embed the manufacture date in the serial number, but every brand uses a different format. Whirlpool and its subsidiaries use a letter-based year-and-plant code, GE uses a two-letter month-year prefix, Samsung encodes the year and month in the first few digits, and Kenmore serial numbers must be routed to the original manufacturer's decoder based on the model number prefix. Our tool handles all of these formats and more.

After decoding the manufacture year, we compare the appliance's age to average lifespans for that appliance type -- refrigerators last about 14 years, dishwashers 10 years, washing machines 11 years, dryers 13 years, ovens 15 years, and microwaves around 9 years. You will see a visual lifespan gauge and guidance on whether repairs are still cost-effective or if replacement makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you read a refrigerator serial number?
It depends on the brand. Whirlpool uses a letter code for the year (e.g., 'D' = 2004, 'T' = 2019) followed by a plant code. GE uses a two-letter prefix where the first letter is the month and the second is the year. Samsung encodes the year and month in the first few digits. Frigidaire places the year code in specific character positions. Our Appliance Age Decoder handles all these formats automatically for 30+ brands -- just select the brand and enter the serial number.
How old is my appliance by serial number?
Every major appliance manufacturer encodes the manufacture date in the serial number using a brand-specific format. Enter your brand and serial number into our free Appliance Age Decoder and it will instantly tell you the manufacture year, current age, expected lifespan for that appliance type, and a visual gauge showing how much useful life remains.
Does the LG model number show the age?
LG model numbers do not directly show the age, but LG serial numbers do. LG serial numbers encode the manufacture year and month in specific character positions. Enter your LG serial number into our decoder and it will extract the manufacture date automatically. The model number identifies the product line and features, while the serial number contains the production date.
Can you tell a year by a serial number?
Yes. Virtually all major appliance manufacturers encode the manufacture year in the serial number. Whirlpool uses letter codes, GE uses a two-letter month-year prefix, Samsung uses numeric year-month codes, and Frigidaire places the year in specific positions. Our free decoder supports 30+ brands and extracts the manufacture year automatically.
How old is my Frigidaire appliance by serial number?
Frigidaire (part of the Electrolux family) encodes the manufacture date in the serial number. The format has changed over the years, but our decoder handles both old and new Frigidaire serial number formats. Enter your Frigidaire serial number into the Appliance Age Decoder, and it will show the manufacture year, appliance age, and remaining expected lifespan.
How to read a Whirlpool serial number?
Whirlpool serial numbers use a letter-based year code in the second character position. For example, 'L' = 2001, 'R' = 2007, 'Y' = 2014, 'D' = 2020. The first character identifies the manufacturing plant. Enter your Whirlpool serial number into our decoder and it will decode the year automatically -- this also works for KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir, and other Whirlpool Corporation brands.
How to read a GE serial number?
GE appliance serial numbers use a two-letter prefix: the first letter represents the month (A = January through L = December, skipping I) and the second letter represents the year. For example, 'TH' means August 2020. Enter your GE serial number into our Appliance Age Decoder for instant results. This format also applies to GE Profile, GE Cafe, Hotpoint, and Monogram appliances.
Is a 10-year-old fridge still good?
It depends on the type and brand, but most refrigerators have an average lifespan of 14 years. At 10 years, your fridge is about 71% through its expected life -- still worth repairing for minor issues. However, if it needs a major repair like a compressor replacement ($400-$700), you should weigh that cost against a new unit. Use our Repair or Replace Calculator for a data-driven recommendation.
