HVAC Age Decoder

Need to know how old your HVAC system is? Enter the brand and serial number below and we'll decode the manufacture date, show you where it sits in its expected lifespan, and help you plan ahead.

How It Works

Every HVAC manufacturer encodes the manufacture date somewhere in the serial number. Some brands use the first four digits as a week-and-year code, others embed the year in specific character positions, and a few use letter-based month codes. Our decoder knows the format for each brand and extracts the exact manufacture year automatically.

Once we know when your system was built, we compare its age against the industry-average lifespan for that equipment type -- central air conditioners average 15 years, gas furnaces 20 years, heat pumps 14 years, and mini-splits around 15 years. The result is a visual lifespan gauge showing how much useful life remains and guidance on whether it is time to start budgeting for a replacement.

Supported Brands (22+)

Carrier / Bryant / Payne Trane / American Standard Lennox / Ducane Rheem / Ruud Goodman / Amana York / Coleman / Luxaire Daikin Mitsubishi Electric Fujitsu Nordyne / Nortek LG Gree MrCool Bosch Samsung Ameristar First Company Bard Comfort-Aire Haier Napoleon Heil / Day & Night

Helps improve decoding accuracy. Found on the same data plate as the serial number.

Typically on a metal plate on the side or back of the unit.

Every HVAC system has a data plate (sometimes called a nameplate or rating plate) with the model and serial number. Here's where to look:

  • Central AC (outdoor unit): On the metal data plate on the side of the condenser unit, usually near the service valve connections or the electrical panel cover
  • Furnace: On the data plate inside the furnace cabinet — open the front panel or blower door to find it
  • Heat Pump (outdoor unit): On the data plate on the side of the unit, similar location to a central AC condenser
  • Mini-Split: On the outdoor unit's side panel or on the indoor unit's data plate (behind the front cover or on the side)
  • Package Unit: On the data plate on the exterior panel of the unit, typically near the electrical disconnect
  • Boiler: On the front panel, side panel, or behind the burner access door

Brands We Decode

Our HVAC age decoder supports all major brands and their subsidiaries:

  • Carrier family: Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Heil, Day & Night, Arcoaire
  • Trane family: Trane, American Standard
  • Lennox: Lennox, including Allied, Armstrong, Ducane, and Concord
  • Rheem family: Rheem, Ruud, Richmond, Weather King
  • Goodman family: Goodman, Amana HVAC (owned by Daikin)
  • York family: York, Coleman, Luxaire, Fraser-Johnston
  • Daikin: Daikin branded equipment
  • Ductless systems: Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu

Average HVAC Lifespans

Understanding your system's expected lifespan helps you budget for replacements and make smarter repair decisions:

  • Central Air Conditioner: 12-20 years (average 15 years)
  • Gas Furnace: 15-25 years (average 20 years)
  • Heat Pump: 10-18 years (average 14 years)
  • Mini-Split: 12-20 years (average 15 years)
  • Package Unit: 12-18 years (average 15 years)
  • Boiler: 15-30 years (average 20 years)

When your system approaches the end of its expected life, our Repair or Replace Calculator can help you decide whether a repair is worth the investment, and our HVAC Cost Estimator can give you Good/Better/Best pricing for a new system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell the age of an HVAC unit by the serial number?
Yes. Every HVAC manufacturer encodes the manufacture date somewhere in the serial number. Carrier uses the first four digits as a week-and-year code, Trane uses the year and week in specific positions, Lennox embeds a two-digit year code, and Rheem/Goodman use a four-digit YYMM or MMYY prefix. Our free HVAC age decoder knows the format for 22+ brands and extracts the manufacture year automatically.
Can you tell the manufacture date from a serial number?
Yes. Most HVAC serial numbers contain the manufacture date encoded as a year code, a year-and-week code, or a year-and-month code. By selecting your brand and entering the serial number into our decoder, you get the exact manufacture year, the system's current age, and a visual gauge showing how much expected lifespan remains.
How do I find out the age of my furnace?
Locate the data plate inside the furnace cabinet (open the front panel or blower door). Find the serial number, then enter it into our HVAC Age Decoder with the correct brand selected. The tool decodes the manufacture year and shows the furnace's age. Gas furnaces have an average lifespan of 20 years.
How to read HVAC serial numbers?
Each brand uses a different format. Carrier serial numbers start with a two-digit week and two-digit year (e.g., 1214 = week 12, 2014). Trane uses a year-week format in positions 1-4. Goodman and Rheem use YYMM in the first four digits. Lennox places a two-digit year code at positions 3-4. Our decoder handles all these formats automatically for 22+ brands.
How to check AC manufacturing date?
Find the serial number on the data plate on the side of your outdoor AC condenser unit. Enter the brand and serial number into our free decoder. The tool identifies the manufacture year based on the brand-specific serial number format and shows you the unit's age, expected lifespan, and a percentage-based lifespan gauge.
Is a 20-year-old furnace too old?
A 20-year-old furnace has reached the average expected lifespan for gas furnaces (15-25 years, average 20). While some furnaces last longer with good maintenance, a unit this age is more likely to need expensive repairs like a cracked heat exchanger. At this age, replacement is usually more cost-effective than major repairs. Use our Repair or Replace Calculator to get a data-driven recommendation.
How do I read my Goodman serial number?
Goodman serial numbers encode the manufacture date in the first four digits using a YYMM format. For example, a serial number starting with 1808 means the unit was manufactured in August 2018. Enter your Goodman serial number into our HVAC Age Decoder to get the manufacture year, system age, and remaining lifespan automatically.
Where can I find my HVAC serial number?
The serial number is on the data plate (nameplate). For central AC and heat pumps, check the side of the outdoor condenser unit near the service valves. For furnaces, open the front panel or blower door and look inside the cabinet. For mini-splits, check the outdoor unit's side panel or behind the indoor unit's front cover. For package units, look on the exterior panel near the electrical disconnect.
