Common Appliance Problems & Troubleshooting

Before calling for service, try these DIY first steps. Many appliance problems have simple causes you can check yourself. If the issue persists, call us or use our Troubleshooter tool for step-by-step diagnosis.

Refrigerator Troubleshooting

Not cooling: Check that the thermostat hasn't been bumped to a warmer setting. Pull the fridge away from the wall and vacuum dust off the condenser coils β€” dirty coils are the #1 cause of cooling loss. Make sure vents between the freezer and fridge compartments aren't blocked by food.

Ice maker not working: Verify the water supply valve behind the fridge is fully open. Replace the water filter if it's older than 6 months β€” a clogged filter restricts flow. Check that the ice maker arm or switch is in the "on" position.

Water leaking on the floor: A clogged defrost drain is the most common cause. Clear the drain hole at the back of the freezer with warm water. Also inspect the water supply line connection for cracks or loose fittings.

Strange noises: Buzzing or humming is normal from the compressor. Rattling usually means the drip pan is loose or the fridge isn't level. A clicking sound every few minutes can indicate a failing compressor relay.

When to call a pro: Call for service if the compressor won't start, refrigerant is leaking (oily residue near coils), or the unit runs constantly without reaching temperature. Average repair cost: $200–$400. Use our Appliance Age Decoder and Repair or Replace Calculator to decide if repair makes sense. Dishwasher Troubleshooting

Not draining: Remove the bottom rack and clean the drain filter and sump area β€” food debris is the most common blockage. Check that the garbage disposal knockout plug was removed (common on new installs). Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher to clear the shared drain.

Not cleaning dishes properly: Make sure you're using the right amount of detergent and that the spray arms spin freely. Clean the spray arm nozzles with a toothpick to remove mineral buildup. Run hot water at the kitchen sink before starting a cycle so the dishwasher fills with hot water from the start.

Leaking: Check the door gasket for cracks, food buildup, or warping. Over-sudsing from too much detergent or the wrong type causes leaks from the door. Inspect the water inlet valve under the unit for drips.

Won't start: Confirm the door latch clicks fully closed β€” the safety switch prevents operation if the door isn't sealed. Check your home's circuit breaker. Try holding the start button for 3 seconds or resetting the control board by cutting power for 60 seconds.

When to call a pro: Call for service if the pump motor hums but won't drain, the control board is unresponsive after a reset, or you see water damage beneath the unit. Average repair cost: $150–$350. Look up your error code: Whirlpool dishwasher error codes.

Oven & Range Troubleshooting

Not heating: For electric ovens, a failed bake or broil element is the usual cause β€” look for visible breaks or blistering on the element. For gas ovens, make sure the igniter glows; a weak igniter that glows but won't light the gas needs replacing. Verify the oven isn't in "demo mode" or locked from a self-clean cycle.

Uneven cooking: Test the actual temperature with an oven thermometer β€” most ovens are off by 25-50 degrees. Recalibrate using the settings menu if your model supports it. Avoid using dark baking sheets that absorb excess heat on the bottom.

Gas smell: A faint smell when the burner first ignites is normal. If you smell gas when the oven is off, turn off the gas supply immediately, open windows, leave the house, and call your gas company. Never use a flame or electrical switches to check for gas leaks.

Self-clean problems: If the door won't unlock after a self-clean cycle, wait at least 30 minutes for the oven to cool completely. If it's still locked, try cutting power for 5 minutes to reset. Avoid running self-clean on very old ovens β€” the extreme heat can damage worn-out door gaskets and components.

When to call a pro: Call for service if you smell gas persistently, the igniter won't glow, or the oven temperature is off by more than 50 degrees after calibration. Any issue involving gas lines requires a licensed technician. Average repair cost: $150–$400.

Washing Machine Troubleshooting

Not spinning: An unbalanced load is the most common cause β€” redistribute heavy items evenly in the drum. Check that the lid switch (top-load) or door latch (front-load) engages properly, as the machine won't spin without it. Worn drive belts on older models can also prevent spinning.

Leaking: Front-loaders: clean the door boot gasket where small items and detergent residue trap moisture and cause mold and leaks. Top-loaders: inspect the fill hoses for cracks, and replace rubber hoses with braided stainless steel lines every 5 years. Overloading causes water to overflow past the tub seal.

Won't drain: Check the drain hose for kinks. Clean the coin trap or drain filter (usually at the front bottom of front-loaders). Make sure the drain hose end is between 30-36 inches above the floor β€” too low causes siphoning, too high prevents drainage.

Excessive vibration: Level the machine using a bubble level and adjust the feet. On new installs, confirm that all shipping bolts have been removed from the back of the unit. Place the washer on a solid floor β€” weak subflooring amplifies vibration.

When to call a pro: Call for service if you hear grinding metal sounds, the drum doesn't move at all, or you see error codes you can't reset. Bearing replacement is a major repair β€” get a quote before committing. Average repair cost: $150–$400. Look up your code: Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE washer error codes.

Dryer Troubleshooting

Not heating: Clean the lint trap and check the exhaust vent β€” a clogged vent is the #1 reason dryers stop heating and is also a fire hazard. For electric dryers, check that both breakers are on (dryers use two breakers, and one can trip independently). For gas dryers, verify the gas supply valve is open.

Takes too long to dry: This is almost always an airflow problem. Disconnect the vent hose and clean it out. Check the exterior vent flap for blockage. Avoid using vinyl or foil vent hoses β€” use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct for best airflow. Loads that are too large also extend dry times.

Noisy operation: A thumping sound is often caused by a flat spot on the drum rollers β€” they need replacing. Squealing indicates a worn belt or idler pulley. A scraping sound means a glide or felt seal has worn through and the drum is contacting metal.

Won't start: Test the door switch by pressing it manually β€” if you don't hear a click, it's broken. Check the thermal fuse (located on the exhaust duct inside the back panel) with a multimeter. A blown thermal fuse is caused by overheating from poor venting.

When to call a pro: Call for service if the drum won't turn, you smell burning, or the thermal fuse keeps blowing (indicating a deeper venting or thermostat issue). Average repair cost: $100–$350. Read more: Why your dryer isn't heating, How to clean your dryer vent.

Microwave Troubleshooting

Not heating: If the microwave runs but doesn't heat food, the magnetron or high-voltage diode has likely failed. Try a simple test: microwave a cup of water for one minute β€” if the water isn't hot, the issue is confirmed. Reset the unit by unplugging for 60 seconds before calling for service.

Turntable not spinning: Remove the turntable and clean the roller ring and the drive coupler underneath. Check that the glass tray is seated properly on the support ring. A failed turntable motor is inexpensive to replace.

Sparking inside: Remove any metal, aluminum foil, or dishes with metallic trim immediately. Check the waveguide cover (a small panel on the interior side wall) for food splatter buildup or damage β€” a burned-through cover causes arcing and is a cheap replacement part. Chipped interior paint can also cause sparks.

Door won't close or latch: Inspect the door hooks and springs for damage. The door switches are a safety interlock β€” if any are broken the microwave won't start. Don't force a door that won't latch; continued use with a damaged door seal can allow microwave radiation leakage.

When to call a pro: Microwave capacitors store lethal voltage even when unplugged. Never open the cabinet yourself. Call for service for any internal component failure. If your microwave is over 8 years old and the magnetron fails, replacement is usually cheaper. Average repair cost: $100–$300. Check your unit's age with our Appliance Age Decoder.
