When to Replace Your AC Unit
Deciding when to replace your AC is one of the biggest home investment decisions you'll make. Replace too early and you waste money on a system that had years left. Replace too late and you waste money on repairs, high energy bills, and risk a breakdown in the worst Texas heat. Here's how to know when it's truly time.
The 8 Warning Signs It's Time to Replace
1. Your System Is Over 10-15 Years Old
In Central Texas, AC units have a shorter lifespan than the national average due to our 8-9 month cooling season. While the national average is 15-20 years, most Texas AC systems are at end-of-life by 12-15 years. Use our HVAC Age Decoder to find your system's exact age from the serial number — many homeowners are surprised to learn their system is older than they thought.
2. Repair Costs Exceed 50% of Replacement Cost
The "50% rule" is the industry standard: if a repair costs more than half of what a new system would cost, replace it. For example, if a new system is $8,000 and you're facing a $4,000+ repair (like a compressor plus evaporator coil), replacement is the better investment. Use our Repair or Replace Calculator to run the numbers for your specific situation.
3. Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing
AC systems lose efficiency as they age. A system rated at 10 SEER when new might operate at 7-8 SEER after 15 years of wear. Compare that to a new 16 SEER system and you could be paying 50-100% more than necessary to cool your home. If your summer electric bills have been climbing year over year (and electricity rates haven't changed proportionally), your AC is the likely culprit.
Use our Energy Savings Calculator to project how much you'd save over 10 years by upgrading to a higher-efficiency system.
4. Your System Uses R-22 Refrigerant
R-22 (Freon) was phased out of production in January 2020. The remaining supply is limited and expensive — currently $100-$175 per pound. A typical recharge requires 5-10 pounds, costing $500-$1,750 each time your system develops a leak. This is a recurring cost that only goes up as supply dwindles. Check current refrigerant pricing to understand the ongoing cost.
New systems use R-410A or the newer R-454B, which are readily available and much less expensive. If your system uses R-22, it's a strong signal to plan a replacement sooner rather than later.
5. Frequent Breakdowns (More Than 2 Repairs in 12 Months)
One repair per year is normal maintenance. Two or more unplanned repairs in a 12-month period indicates a system in decline. The components are aging together — when the capacitor fails, the compressor is probably next. Each repair costs $150-$500+, and the cumulative cost quickly approaches replacement territory.
6. Uneven Cooling or Humidity Problems
If some rooms are comfortable while others are too warm, or if your home feels clammy and humid even with the AC running, the system may have lost capacity. This can be due to a failing compressor, duct problems, or a system that was never properly sized. While duct issues can be fixed independently, capacity loss in the unit itself means replacement.
7. Unusual Noises or Smells
Grinding, screeching, or banging sounds indicate mechanical failure — worn bearings, loose components, or a failing compressor. A musty or burning smell can indicate mold in the system or overheating electrical components. While some of these can be repaired, in an older system they often signal cascading failures.
8. Your System Doesn't Match Current Needs
If you've added square footage, enclosed a garage, removed shade trees, or upgraded to less-insulated windows, your existing system may be undersized. Similarly, if household size has increased (more people = more heat generated indoors), you may need more capacity. Use our BTU Calculator to determine the right size for your current home.
The Real Cost: Keeping vs. Replacing
Here's a 5-year cost comparison for a typical Central Texas home:
| Cost Factor | Keep Old AC (10 SEER) | New AC (16 SEER) |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cooling cost | $2,400-$3,200 | $1,500-$2,000 |
| 5-year energy cost | $12,000-$16,000 | $7,500-$10,000 |
| Expected repairs (5 yr) | $1,500-$4,000 | $0 (warranty) |
| System purchase | $0 | $5,800-$10,000 |
| 5-Year Total | $13,500-$20,000 | $13,300-$20,000 |
The 5-year total is roughly equal — but with a new system you also get better comfort, reliability, a 10-year warranty, higher home value, and a system that will continue saving money in years 6-15.
Best Time to Replace
Plan your replacement for the off-season (October-November or February-March) when HVAC companies are less busy and may offer discounts. Avoid emergency replacement in June-August — you'll pay premium pricing, wait longer for installation, and have fewer equipment options in stock.
If you know your system is nearing end-of-life, start getting quotes 6-12 months before you expect to need it. This gives you time to compare options, arrange financing, and choose the best system rather than being forced into whatever's available during an emergency.
